Sony Xperia ZR has been officially updated to latest version of Android, 4.4.4 KitKat by Sony. The update is rolling out to its users slowly via PC companion and OTA updates. The build number for the latest firmware is 10.5.1.A.0.283. The new update is being rolled out in selected countries for now. If someone has not received the update yet, then it is possible that your region has not started receiving yet. Those users who have rooted there phones or unlocked the bootloader, will not receive the update either. Those users will have to update their Xperia ZR to Android 4.4.4 KitKat manually.
This particular guide is based on updating two model of Xperia ZR: C5502 and C5503. If you are using any other model, then you should not use this guide. C5502 is the 3G only version while C5503 sport 4G LTE connectivity. There are different firmwares for both devices and make sure that you follow the guide to the letter to install the intended firmware for your device. The build number for both devices is 10.5.1.A.0.283. Both sport same features and changes. If you try to install C5503 firmware in C5502, it might show 4G as a connectivity option in the settings but it might not actually work. And you should not try such a thing.
To update these devices manually. flashtool will be used in this guide. This manual update guide will work on both rooted and non-rooted phones, locked and unlocked bootloaders. After installing 10.5.1.A.0.283 firmware ftf on Xperia ZR, root access will be lost (if rooted). Root access can be regained after flashing the .283 firmware ftf. The new method for rooting is explained in next post.
There are no major UI changes in the new update but the performance has been improved to a great extent and battery drain problems have been resolved. The rest of the changes include some stock applications updates, new Google apps updates and some sync app updates.

To install 10.5.1.A.0.283 ftf on Xperia ZR C5502 and C5503, follow the steps given below.
1. Install Flashtool
This is probably the most crucial step involved in the whole process. You can install flashtool on Windows, Mac and Linux. To begin its installation, download Flashtool from here. After downloading it, unpack the package and begin the installation. The rest of the basic instructions are also given on the same page. However, few instructions vary from device to device which will be described in this guide.
2. Install USB and Flashmode Drivers
If you are failing to install this firmware on your device or not being able to connect the device properly, then it is probably because of the drivers your machine is missing. When you will connect your device with the PC, it will install some basic drivers for SD card and internal storage reading automatically but it will not install the drivers required for installation of ftf firmware or other developement related things. Since flashtool is already installed, go to Flashtool’s installation folder and locate the drivers folder. Execute the drivers installer and select Xperia ZR drivers, flashmode drivers and fastboot drivers. These drivers will install in a while. Also make sure that your verify these drivers by connecting your device once. Also connect the device in flashmode. To do so, turn off the device, connect USB cable to PC only, hold volume down button on Xperia device and while holding the button connect USB to mobile. LED will turn green and screen will remain black. It should not go into charging mode as long as you do not disconnect it. It it happens, then you are good to go! Disconnect the phone after testing.
3. Backup Data
As mentioned earlier, it is a clean installation method. It will wipe all the data stored on the device’s internal storage. It includes all the media files, contacts stored in phone’s storage, messages and applications. Make a backup of everything on your device that you do not want to lose. Following guide will be able to help you through this. All data stored on internal storage must be copied to a PC or any other suitable machine.
4. Charge Your Phone!
The phone should not turn off in middle of the flashing. It can do some damage to the phone. In most of the cases, phones are saved but don’t take the risk. It is highly recommended that the phone should be charged up to 50% at least. It will make sure that your device has no problem keeping up with the time that full flashing will take. Usually, it is no more that 5 minutes.
Also make sure that your PC shouldn’t turn off during the flashing process. It can have same consequences as phone turning off in middle of the flashing.
