Google’s mail application for Android has received one of the most prominent updates with build number 5.0 (1520254). The latest version of Gmail app for Android is available for download as a standalone Apk. It might take days before it is made available for automatic update via the Google Play Store. So, those users who cannot wait to get their hands on this newer version can download the apk and install it manually.
The GMail 5.0 has been skinned in Android Lollipop design. It looks more like the material design and closer to Google Inbox app. The tabs have been redefined and the photo icons are changed as well. There are number of changes here and there but the changes are not limited to the looks only.
THe new GMail app has been developed to takeover as the only EMail application on your Android device. It can now handle personal Email accounts like Yahoo, AOL and corporate Exchange Email accounts. THis is the major breakthrough in this application which can make it stand out in the other Email applications. In certain ways it can be better than the Inbox application and it can also be better than the pre-loaded applications by manufacturers of non-Nexus devices.
To be able to use Exchange with GMail, users will have to install two apks. One is for GMail 5.0 while other is for setting up Exchange accounts using the GMail application. Using this application will unify all the Email accounts’ inboxes in one place. It certainly gets hard to manage multiple EMail accounts using different Email apps sometimes. The adoption to this new feature will be slow, but if it works out, there is a great chance that we will not be needing another Email app on any Android phone anymore.
